Excursion Multi-use hedges on Tuesday, 31.05. in Höbersdorf, Lower Austria
Hedges ensure that the fertile topsoil is protected from wind erosion and improve the microclimate. This is becoming increasingly important as an adaptation to climate change. They provide habitats for insects, birds, and mammals, thereby promoting biodiversity and beneficial insects. Multi-use hedges are created to provide additional benefits to the farm beyond these positive effects. A typical example is the use of (wild) fruit and nuts. We visit existing multi-use hedges on the Binder farm, analyze them together with the farm manager with regard to benefits, biodiversity and protection function.
Other possible uses of multi-use hedges will also be discussed. Multi-use hedges are a proven agroforestry system suitable for Central European agricultural and climatic conditions.

Seminar Wild bees and beneficial insects promotion in organic agriculture on Thursday, 02.06.
What are the most important wild bees and beneficial insects?
What is their importance for agriculture ?
What are the possibilities for pest control and beneficial insect promotion on the organic farm?
Examples are used to show the achievements of beneficial insects, which are usually unrecognized. Furthermore, possibilities for pest control and promotion of beneficial insects, e.g. by creating suitable habitats such as flower strips, will be discussed. During exercises (microscopy, collections in the field, vegetation) the knowledge is expanded and methods are shown that can also be used on the farm.
Date: Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 09:00 to 14:00
Target group: Organic arable farmers
Speakers: Katharina Zenz, MSc, Dr. Bernhard Kromp
Location: Bio Research Austria, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134, 1220 Vienna

Lecture The pioneer women of organic agriculture on Tuesday, 14.06.
The extent to which women have driven the development of organic agriculture is still largely unnoticed today. The names of pioneer women like Mina Hofstetter, Lili Kolisko or Gabrielle Howard are hardly known today - unjustly. Mathilde Schmitt is the author of the book "Passion and Profession - Pioneers of Organic Farming", which she wrote together with Heide Inhetveen and Ira Spieker. She traces the life stories and achievements of organic pioneer women who passionately researched, experimented, published, founded schools and thus significantly advanced organic agriculture.
Date: Tuesday, June 14, 2022 from 19:30 to 21:00
Target group: Organic arable farmers
Speaker: Dr. Mathilde Schmitt
Location: Bio Research Austria, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134, 1220 Vienna
Costs: free of charge
Registration: Register here until June, 13 or by phone +43 (0) 1‑4000 49 150.
Seminar No fear of the field thistle on Tuesday, 21.06.
The field thistle is the terror of many organic farmers. This must not be the case, but you should know about the plant and its properties, be aware of the causes of thistle and be familiar with the effects of previous management on the soil and the site properties of the field.
Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2022 from 09:00 to 14:00
Target group: Organic arable farmers
Speaker: Dr. Wilfried Hartl
Location: Bio Research Austria, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134, 1220 Vienna
Costs: 20 € subsidized, 40 € unsubsidized
Registration: Register here until June, 15 or by phone +43 (0) 1‑4000 49 150.
Seminar Optimizing Soil Tillage on Thursday, 23.06. (Attention, date changed!)
Adapted tillage for different soil types and conditions is a challenge. The choice of the best possible device, the right equipment and setting of the respective device are based very much on your own experience, but also on simple physical and soil-biological principles. This seminar is intended to convey these basics and to facilitate the optimal choice of device and application in order to be able to take the appropriate measures at the right time.
Date: Thursday, June, 23 from 09:00 bis 17:00 Uhr
Target group: Organic arable farmers
Speakers: Ing. Josef Jugovits, Dr. Wilfried Hartl
Location: Bio Research Austria, Esslinger Hauptstraße 132-134, 1220 Vienna
Kosten: 55 € subsidized, 110 € unsubsidized
Registration: Register here until June, 20 or by phone +43 (0) 1‑4000 49 150.
We will be happy to answer any questions you may have (+43 1 4000 49150).
We look forward to your participation!
Yours sincerely,
Your team of Bio Research Austria
