Certificate course soil practitioner arable farming 2023

High natural soil fertility is the basis for long-term operational success in agriculture. Careful soil management and humus enhancement ensure sustainably good yields and plant health. The Soil Practitioner certificate course provides farmers and people working in agricultural fields with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of soil management and soil ecology.
The course comprises 9 course days spread over the year.

Excursion multi-use hedges on Wednesday, 09.11.2022 from 2 p.m. in Höbersdorf, Lower Austria

Hedges ensure that the fertile topsoil is protected from wind erosion and improve the microclimate. This is becoming increasingly important as an adaptation to climate change. They provide habitats for insects, birds, and mammals, thereby promoting biodiversity and beneficial insects. Multi-use hedges are created to provide additional benefits to the farm beyond these positive effects. A typical example is the use of (wild) fruit and nuts. We visit existing multi-use hedges on the Binder farm, analyze them together with the farm manager with regard to benefits, biodiversity and protection function.
Other uses of multi-use hedges will also be discussed. Multi-use hedges are a proven agroforestry system suitable for Central European agricultural and climatic conditions.

Webinar - Site and crop rotation adapted greening - multiple effects on Wed., 16.11.2022

Which factors with regard to plant species and machine use support a successful intercropping?
What is the importance of location in greening cultivation? What strategies can be pursued during dry periods?
Current research results from practice answer questions about greening cultivation. Clarified: If the release of nutrients through greening is matched to the needs of the following crop, a wide range of positive effects can be achieved!

Webinar - Ecological plant protection in the garden on Thu., 17.11.2022

Does the sight of aphids, grubs and co. still upset you? Or have you already been initiated into the "secrets" of nature-oriented gardening? Nature-oriented gardens are not only an eye-catcher, but also work very well as a basis for ecological plant protection! If unwelcome garden visitors do show up, they are a ready meal for the many beneficial insects that have already taken up residence in your near-natural garden.
In this lecture you will learn the most important measures to bring your garden a little closer to nature and thus to the ecological balance, so that you can enjoy healthy plants for many years!

The lecture takes place in the framework of the Interreg project SYM:BIO AT-CZ, which is co-financed by the ERDF fund of the EU and the Vienna Environmental Advocacy Office.

Seminar Understanding and using nitrogen dynamics - for healthy and drought-adapted soil management on Thuesday, 22.11.2022

Livestock-less farming requires a detailed knowledge of nitrogen availability, especially in organic farming. In this practice-oriented seminar, the basics of N-dynamics and the importance of nitrogen fixation by legumes will be discussed. A simple method for estimating nitrate-N in the soil will be demonstrated on soil samples brought by the participants. Furthermore, the new method for the assessment of soil quality and soil health developed in the project AGRISAN will be presented.

Seminar Evaluating humus-enhancing measures - for healthy and drought-adapted soil management on Fryday 02.12.2022
Humus is of outstanding importance for soil fertility, climate and groundwater protection. In the seminar, the new humus theory is presented and the question of stable humus compounds in the soil is explored. Humus balancing will be presented as a calculation tool, and the advantages and disadvantages of various humus-building measures such as crop rotation, the addition of crop residues, green manure and compost will be explained. The participants will learn how to extract soil data for humus balancing from eBOD, the electronic soil map, and what other information they can use for their farm. Furthermore, the new method for assessing soil quality and soil health developed in the AGRISAN project will be presented.

'Closing the loop' brochure available in the webshop

The brochure 'Closing loops on the farm' summarizes the results and experiences from our 3-year EIP project "Closing loops". You can expect nutrient measurements and balances, field reports and ecological and economic assessments of innovative 'closed-loop' measures such as transfer mulch, clover-grass manure and clover-grass-biogas-manure cooperatives, composting, etc. The 40-page brochure is now available in the Bio Research webshop (at shipping costs) or from the project partners.
