Dear ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues!

The Federal Environment Agency, the Austrian Soil Science Society (ÖBG) and the Austrian Association for Contaminated Sites Management (ÖVA) cordially invite you to the Autumn Meeting 2023 of the Soil Forum Austria from Wednesday, 18th to Thursday, 19th October 2023 in Tulln.

TOPIC: Monitoring, sustainable management and contaminated sites - all regulated?

The EU Soil Monitoring Law - Perspectives and Consequences for an Implementation in Austria

Soils are essential for our food, nature and economy and deserve the same protection as water, air and the marine environment.

On July 5th, 2023, the European Commission presented the Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience (Soil Monitoring Law). This is a legislative proposal under the EU Soil Strategy for 2030.

With the proposal for the EU Soil Monitoring Law, among other things.

- measures for soil monitoring determined, parameters and criteria for healthy soils, land use and sealing,
- a common framework for the sustainable use and restoration of soils is described, and
- regulated the recording and management of contaminated sites across the board.

Healthy soils are an essential prerequisite for many areas of environmental policy, such as climate neutrality or a clean and circular economy. This serves to counteract soil degradation and biodiversity loss, provide healthy food, and thus protect human health.

In the course of the autumn meeting 2023, the implementation and perspectives of the EU Soil Strategy 2030 - in particular the Soil Monitoring Law and current activities in Austria - will be discussed in the expert:inside circle.
